JANE: Abortion and the Underground

Jane: Abortion and the Underground closed last Sunday. I couldn’t be more thankful to Idle Muse Theatre Company for trusting me when I said we should make this our next collaboration. I’m thankful to all the artists involved for bringing their talents, thoughtfulness, and bravery to telling this story together. I’m thankful some of the members of the Janes got to see it and gave us their love and blessings. We made something meaningful to many people, and I’m grateful that it existed, even for a short time.

This is probably the most relevant show I’ve ever worked on. I wish it could have just been a story about a point in history, a time we’ve left behind, but this play at this time feels like a lesson in history dangerously repeating itself. It’s also a lesson in the power of organizing. If you don’t like how things are or the direction we’re heading in, get yourself to organizing with like-minded people. Every day people can accomplish extraordinary things. Let the legacy of the Janes light that fire under your ass.
